Spot Clean First
Swift attention to spots maintains your rug's beauty between complete washes. Simply blot with a clean, damp cloth and wool-specific detergent – avoiding harsh rubbing. For handwoven wool pieces, gentle spot treatment preserves the weave instead of machine washing.
Vacuum Gently
Use soft brush attachments only, avoiding stiff bristles that may compromise the fibres. For high-traffic areas, simply increase the frequency of gentle vacuuming while maintaining a delicate touch.
Using Gentle Detergent & Cold Water
Select pH-neutral, wool-specific detergents for washing – avoiding harsh cleaning agents such as bleach and fabric softeners. Cold water and a delicate cycle help preserve the quality of New Zealand Wool.
Note: Handwoven rugs should be spot cleaned for stains. For deep cleaning, use a shower or bathtub with cold water and wool-specific detergent rather than machine washing.
Natural Air Drying
Allow your rug to dry naturally, beginning with air drying to release moisture gradually. This process typically requires 12–24 hours for New Zealand wool and organic cotton rugs, extending to 24–36 hours for handwoven pieces. Complete the drying process with a brief, low-heat dryer cycle to achieve optimal softness (handwoven rugs excluded – allow to air dry flat for best results).
Understanding Shedding
Each rug undergoes specialised anti-shed treatment, yet natural shedding remains normal during the first 3-4 months. While initial shedding diminishes over time, occasional shedding is expected—this preserves the wool's authentic texture and artisanal character.
Commercial Washing Machine Guide
We recommend using a front-loading washing machine only for all New Zealand Wool rugs for the best results. Fibres can snag in top-loading washing machines, which can lead to matting, increased shedding and overall wear over time.
