Traditional jute rugs cannot be washed and are widely considered difficult to maintain in everyday living environments. This collection uses a jute yarn spun finer than traditional jute, creating a more flexible fibre that can tolerate a gentle cold wash without becoming stiff or losing its shape. A cotton weft stabilises the structure, allowing the rug to be washed while preserving the natural character of the fibre.
Each rug is made from 40% natural jute, 40% wool and 20% cotton by weight. The jute is woven on a cotton weft for added stability, while wool is used in the design accents.
Each rug is handwoven using a traditional flatweave technique with a zero-pile construction. The jute yarn is spun finer than standard jute to create a more flexible fibre, and a cotton weft is incorporated to stabilise the structure. This combination allows the material to respond more comfortably to water during washing while preserving the integrity and natural variation of the jute.
Jute is naturally breathable and durable, making it well suited to varying conditions and everyday environments. It is also biodegradable and renewable, making it a responsible choice for those seeking natural materials for their homes.
The rugs are ethically handwoven in India. The collection is OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified, meaning the textiles have been independently tested for harmful substances. Double is also a member of Care & Fair, an initiative focused on eliminating illegal child labour and improving working conditions in the carpet trade.
Machine wash in cold water on a gentle cycle, around 15–20 minutes. High-speed spinning is not recommended as it may damage the fibre structure over time. The cotton weft and refined jute yarn construction allow the rug to tolerate gentle washing while maintaining its shape and integrity.
A mild detergent is sufficient for routine washing. Gentle starch-based soaps and anti-bacterial detergents are also suitable. Avoid bleach and strong chemical cleaners, as these can compromise the natural fibres.
Slight colour softening may occur gradually with repeated washing. This is a normal characteristic of natural fibres and part of how they age over time.
The collection features three designs, each in a distinct colourway: Tile in Cream, Palisade in Mustard and Vestige in Deep Red. Each design introduces subtle geometric patterns rendered in a restrained palette of natural tones with muted colour accents.
The collection is available in seven sizes, including three runner sizes and four area sizes.
Runner sizes: 60 × 90 cm, 90 × 150 cm, 80 × 250 cm
Area sizes: 160 × 230 cm, 200 × 300 cm, 250 × 350 cm, 300 × 400 cm
All designs are available across the full size range.
