“Listening intently is the most important role of any designer. My practice is to always understand the brief and make sure I’m addressing their needs first, and then I weave my style in.”

In conversation with Gaby Vargas
Can you describe your design aesthetic when it comes to your own home? What words would you use to characterise it?
“The words ‘more is more’ come to mind when trying to describe my design aesthetic. I have always been drawn to colour and can naturally splash it around my home without fear. I like patterns and boldness, but I also enjoy order and clean spaces, so I consider my home style to be maximal minimalist.”
How do you weave elements of your personal taste and style into your interior design projects while still catering to your clients' needs?
“Listening intently is the most important role of any designer. My practice is to always understand the brief and make sure I’m addressing their needs first, and then I weave my style in.”
We couldn't help but notice the stunning Double rug in your space, Squiggle! What inspired you to choose this particular design, and how does it enhance the overall ambience of your interior?
“It was love at first sight! I was looking for something fun and colourful that could enhance the living room and make my acrylic tables be a focal point and pop more. When I saw Squiggle, I knew right away it was going to look perfect. Now my living room brings me a lot of joy and energy.”
What aspects of Double rugs resonate most with you as an interior designer?
“It’s the design that speaks to me, always. I appreciate how versatile Double rugs are. I think everyone can find something they like, whether it’s colourful and bold or neutral and cosy. Not to mention, it’s machine washable. As a pet owner myself, I understand the frustration of seeing something beautiful quickly become damaged. That fear is always there when you’re considering investing in furniture and homewares.”
“Machine-washable rugs provide a wonderful sense of reassurance amidst life's inevitable messiness. This feature appeals to a wide range of people for various reasons, making it a valuable offering for clients.”
Besides the Squiggle rug, what are other Double rugs you would recommend to our readers and why?
“Tranquil Multi Chenille Rug
This one was inspired by the radical designs of the Memphis Group. It’s my favourite design movement, so I can’t recommend this style enough.
Jig Multi Outdoor Rug
I simply love the retro feel that Jig gives. Its colour palette makes me nostalgic for a time I never lived. This style will absolutely bring character to any space since it can also be used indoors too.
Extroverted Mustard Cotton Feel Rug
I’ve been really drawn to yellow lately, and this mustard tone with its organic lines makes this design really work. I think this rug is perfect if you’re looking to bring a little colour to your space.
Doodles Cream Chenille Rug
I love all the fun shapes in Doodles, actually, I love anything colourful in a light background. This rug can really bring playfulness into any space, you don’t have to be a kid to enjoy it.”
What are your top tips for homeowners who are embarking on their own interior design projects?
“The best advice I can give is: don’t be afraid to hire an interior designer. Having the input and expertise of a professional from the beginning of your project will make the experience flow better, be streamlined, and save you time and money. “
You've garnered a well-deserved award nomination! Can you tell us about this?
“Yes! My final student project was selected as a finalist for the 38th Dulux Colour Awards. This is a huge honour to me because colour is my passion so to have been recognised for my use of it by a panel of brilliant professionals really means everything to me.
The brief was to design a unique dining experience for 50 people in Sydney’s CBD that combines the client’s Italian-based food with a wine-tasting experience.
I was inspired by Rome's Campo de' Fiori, a century-old market located in what used to be a flower field. I took the shapes, forms, and patterns displayed by the canopies and stalls and created an energetic space incorporating these forms in a contemporary way.
I selected these colours because I wanted the space to be vibrant and reflect the colour scheme of a wildflower garden with its bright pastels.”
“The best advice I can give is: don’t be afraid to hire an interior designer. Having the input and expertise of a professional from the beginning of your project will make the experience flow better.”
