A Rug, Not a Pelt
Double Studio offers Mackenzie in two forms: a 75 × 110 cm hide-shaped rug in mocha for those who love the shape of natural sheepskin and rectangular area rugs in cream, dark beige, and mocha.
Both use 100% New Zealand wool, but not a traditional sheepskin pelt. Instead, the wool is tufted onto flexible organic cotton canvas. Wes developed it as a cruelty-free alternative to traditional sheepskin - and also made the rug far easier to wash and live with.
The long, loose wool pile keeps the softness and tactile character associated with sheepskin, without the leather backing that can make traditional hides more difficult to clean and dry.
From Bedside Scale to the Centre of the Room
The Mackenzie wool rug is ideal for next to the bed or under a reading chair.Â
At 160 × 230 cm, it can soften a bedroom or smaller sitting area. The 200 × 300 cm size gives a sofa arrangement more breathing room. At 250 × 350 cm and 300 × 400 cm, the wool becomes a substantial part of the room.

Cream, Dark Beige, or Mocha
Long wool reacts to colour differently from a flat weave. Fibres lean, separate, and catch the light. This can create small tonal changes across the pile.
Mackenzie cream is the palest from the range. It works well with light timber, warm whites, and linen. Compare it with different textures in our cream rugs collection or order a swatch to see which shade works best in your home.
Dark beige is warmer without getting too brown. Mocha is even deeper and works really well against pale upholstery, timber, or stone. Our brown rugs collection includes recycled polyester and natural fibre options, giving you other ways to work with earthier tones.
Wool, But More ForgivingÂ
Mackenzie uses the flexible construction we use across our washable New Zealand wool range. This makes it easier for you to clean and move around than many traditionally backed wool rugs. Spot cleaning will deal with many everyday spills. When you need a deeper clean, the dimensions of the rug and the capacity of your machine determine the right method.
Washable doesn’t mean you should push every size into a domestic washing machine.
Our guide on How to Clean a Wool Rug covers the day-to-day approach, while Can You Wash Rugs in a Washing Machine? explains what to check before attempting a full wash.

A Note on Wool Shedding
Natural wool sheds, especially when the rug is new. Mackenzie has the longest pile and loosest wool construction in our wool range, so you may notice more loose fibres than with our denser or lower-pile wool rugs.Â
Shedding is usually most noticeable during the first few months and should settle to a lower level with use. Vacuum the rug gently to manage it. Don’t use rotating brushes or pull fibres out from the pile.
If shedding is a priority, consider a denser fine-cut pile or a lower-pile, such as a flatweave. For an entirely different surface, our jute rugs have a firmer, more visibly woven texture.Â
