Neo Neutral: a free design guide

Emerging at the intersection of Neo Deco, California Modern and Modern Mediterranean design trends, Neo Neutral is the natural response to the past decades’s increase in energy, colour and abstract shapes—the question became “how do we do this while still maintaining a neutral and simple palette?” Neo neutral answers that question.

Amanda Shadforth is an accomplished fine artist who specialises in paint and sculpture. Working in the medium of oil on canvas and mixed-media sculpture, she creates still-life studies of the commonplace told through her distinct lens.

Inspired by nature and found objects, Shadforth plays with the notion of purpose and repurpose to paint tableaux in striking photorealism and creates sculptures that challenge tangible perception.

The Neo Neutral interiors style represents an intersection of Neo Deco, California Modern and Modern Mediterranean design trends. It seems to have emerged naturally in response to an increased desire for energy, colour and abstract shapes within the home.

“When I style a room, I really like to start with the artwork. Being an artist, I find that the artwork acts as the empty canvas. Then, I like to play with colours that feature in the work, and bring those to life in other elements of the room.”

The aesthetic is led by warmth — much more so than the Bohemian and Coastal trends we have seen previously. Maintaining the perfect balance between vibrancy, neutrality and a simple palette, Neo Neutral has evolved as the prominent
neutrals led design trend in Australia today.

The Neo Neutral style looks towards deeper, richer earth tones. Think gorgeous deep rusts, golden ochres, rich charcoals, textured creamy whites and, overall, more depth to what we have seen in previous neutral palettes.

“Your space should reflect your personality, so there is always room for injections of colour. Interior styling is always about balance and restraint, incorporating elements that work in harmony with each other.
” says Amanda.
