The Jono x Double Wild South Collection: Where Friendship Meets Tasmanian Soul

When creative minds align around shared values, something extraordinary happens. This is exactly what unfolded when Jono and the Double team finally brought their long-simmering collaboration to life with the Wild South collection. As Jono puts it: "I've known the Double team for a while and always loved what they do. Their pieces are thoughtful, practical, and made for real life. Over time we kept circling back to the idea of working together. It never felt forced, it just came out of conversation, and eventually the timing was right."

There's something beautifully organic about partnerships that grow from genuine respect rather than strategic necessity. "I think we knew it would work because there was already so much trust," Jono reflects. "We share the same values around design, so it felt like a natural fit from the beginning." What emerges from this foundation is a collection that feels both fresh and familiar – much like the creative process that brought it to life.

Join us as Jono takes us deeper into the Wild South story, sharing the inspirations and discoveries that shaped this uniquely Australian collaboration.

“We share the same values around design, so it felt like a natural fit from the beginning.”

Creative Muse

There's something about Tasmania that gets under your skin – a quality that transforms casual visitors into devoted pilgrims, returning again and again to drink from its creative well. For Jono, this island has become far more than a holiday destination; it's evolved into his creative compass, guiding the design philosophy that would eventually birth the Wild South collection.

"Tasmania has really become a muse for me," Jono explains. "I've travelled all over the island and every time I come back I find something new that inspires me. There's a stillness to the place that makes you slow down. The colours are rich but understated, the architecture carries a beautiful weight of history, but the land itself holds even more." It's this deeper connection – to Country, to stories embedded in the landscape – that permeates every thread of the collection. "The landscapes feel both wild and grounding, and that mix has shaped the way I design, layered, personal, and always with a sense of place."

But how do you capture the essence of an entire island and weave it into something that feels at home in a living room? Jono's process is beautifully intuitive: "I started by going back through photos from my trips to Tasmania, but also by remembering the moments that stood out, the places we stayed, the food we ate, the landscapes that made me stop and take a breath." From these visceral memories, he begins the delicate alchemy of translation – breaking down impressions into colours and shapes, sketching ideas that honour the source while serving the home. "For me it comes down to colour and texture. I'll notice the purples in a rock face or the warm orange of the Bay of Fires and start working out how that could translate into a yarn colour. You don't want a rug that looks like a photograph of a place, you want one that carries the feeling of being there."

Stories in fabric

The magic of translating landscape into liveable art lies in understanding that a rug isn't just decoration – it's a daily companion that carries stories within its fibres. For Jono, this meant navigating the delicate balance between aesthetic ambition and practical reality, ensuring each piece could maintain its visual sophistication while embracing the washable functionality that makes Double rugs so revolutionary.

"I was always mindful of how the designs would translate into Double's washable wool," Jono explains. "That meant being smart about scale, line weight, and colour saturation so the detail stayed clear once woven. But I never felt limited. If anything, the functionality made the collection stronger, because these rugs are meant to be lived on." This isn't about compromise – it's about enhancement. The washable nature doesn't diminish the design; it liberates it, allowing these pieces to be true partners in daily life rather than precious objects to admire from afar.

The technical mastery required to achieve this balance speaks to both Jono's design expertise and Double's innovative approach to textile manufacturing. Each pattern had to be carefully considered for how it would translate through the weaving process, ensuring that the subtle gradations of Tasmanian light and the rich textures of ancient landscapes would remain vivid and clear once transformed into yarn. "The fact that they can be washed and still keep their shape and texture is part of what makes them so exciting," Jono notes. It's this marriage of artistry and engineering that elevates the Wild South collection beyond mere floor coverings into something approaching textile architecture – pieces that structure and define space while telling the ongoing story of the lives lived upon them.

Living Personalities

Every rug in the Wild South collection has been designed with a specific character in mind – not just aesthetic preferences, but the way people actually inhabit their spaces. With ten distinct styles across different colour families, each piece speaks to different personalities and environments, reflecting Jono's deep understanding that great design must serve the individual, not the other way around.

Take Quoin, a piece that feels particularly close to Jono's heart: "It's based on the sandstone cottages in Hobart's Battery Point, with their strong stone corners. It's graphic and bold, but the neutral palette keeps it versatile. I see it in a layered, modern home where the rug becomes an anchor piece without overwhelming the space." There's something beautifully democratic about this approach – a rug that can hold its own in a design-forward space while remaining approachable enough not to intimidate. Then there's Tasman, drawing inspiration from the towering dolerite cliffs of Tasmania's southern coastline: "It has more pattern running through it, but the tone-on-tone palette keeps it grounded. The border gives it a sense of formality, which means it can work equally well in a heritage home or in a more contemporary, graphic apartment. It's a rug that adds personality while still being easy to live with."

This thoughtful consideration of how people actually live reflects Jono's core philosophy: "I've always believed homes should be lived in, not styled to perfection. That's what I love about this collection. The rugs have depth and story, but they're also made for real life. You can spill on them, wash them, and keep enjoying them for years." His hope extends beyond mere functionality to something more profound – that these pieces create genuine connection. "My hope is that when people bring these rugs into their homes, they don't just see a product, they feel a connection. Maybe it reminds them of a trip, maybe it sparks a memory, or maybe it just makes the room feel more grounded. That's what design is about for me." It's this understanding that transforms the Wild South collection from beautiful objects into meaningful companions for the way we actually live.

“I've always believed homes should be lived in, not styled to perfection. That's what I love about this collection.”

What emerges from Jono's reflections is a collection that transcends the typical boundaries between art and utility, between inspiration and application. The Wild South rugs represent something rare in contemporary design – pieces that carry genuine emotional weight while serving the practical demands of modern living. Through his deep connection to Tasmania's landscapes and his intuitive understanding of how people actually inhabit their homes, Jono has created more than just beautiful floor coverings; he's woven stories, memories, and a sense of place into every thread.

Perhaps most remarkably, this collaboration demonstrates what happens when creative vision aligns with functional innovation. The partnership between Jono and Double didn't require compromise – instead, it revealed new possibilities. The washable wool technology didn't limit the design; it liberated it, allowing these sophisticated pieces to be truly lived with rather than merely admired. As Jono beautifully puts it, his hope is that people don't just see a product when they bring these rugs home, but feel a connection – whether it sparks a memory, reminds them of a journey, or simply makes their space feel more grounded. In a world often obsessed with perfection, the Wild South collection offers something more valuable: the permission to live beautifully, messily, and authentically, with rugs that are as resilient as they are remarkable.
