“I guess our home is just a reflection of us and the stuff we like. It's holy and comfortable. Well, that’s how it feels to us – which I guess is important.”
Thomas’ deep connection to surfing naturally led him to develop a passion for the craft of board shaping. What began as a personal interest soon grew into a thriving career, ultimately leading to the establishment of his brand, Thomas Surfboards. His meticulously crafted longboards are extensions of his identity — a reflection of Aussie culture, where surfing is deeply ingrained in the nation’s history through its landscapes. This cultural backdrop inspires the designs of his latest project with Double. Reimagining Thomas Surfboards’ iconic longboards, the collection features six designs, each pattern and name paying tribute to legendary Australian surf beaches along the East Coast, from Snapper Rocks to Bondi to Bells Beach.
“My favourite surf spots are still the points at Noosa, it’s home. Yeah, it’s super crowded these days but it still has perfect waves and there’s really no place like home.”
When you enter Thomas’ Noosa home, you’re immediately greeted with a sense of simplicity, functionality, and groundedness. It’s a warm, well-lived-in space where life unfolds freely — simple yet perfect for the family that calls it home. Thomas believes that what truly makes a house a home is the level of comfort and the space’s ability to cater to the family’s needs. When asked about his favourite room, he speaks not only of the place but of the memories tied to it. The kitchen, specifically, has become a central hub for their family gatherings and conversations over meals, making it an essential part of their daily life.
"I'd say the kitchen is my favourite part of our home. It's where we spend the most time as a family, chatting, preparing meals, and socialising. I feel kitchens are always a bit of the centre of a home."
Thomas deeply values the concept of home and the almost sacred art of curating a family space, making his collaboration with Double a natural fit. This partnership unites two Aussie brands, celebrating coastal living with a collection that combines bold design and comfort. Sparked by a simple conversation between Thomas and Double's founders, the collection has taken shape in unique board-shaped rugs made for those who live by the waves or dream of doing so.
“This is definitely my first collaboration with a rug company. It came about from just chatting to the Double founders when they were ordering a surfboard — well, I think that’s how it happened.”
The Aussie board shaper has always prioritised functionality and comfort in his space, valuing innovative solutions that make home life easy. Double's machine washable rugs embody a carefree, no-worries lifestyle, designed to withstand all the messes of coastal living — from sandy footprints to remnants of adventures under the Aussie sun. Beyond their practicality, the collection features bold designs that bring a touch of Aussie surf culture into any home, adding character to every room they grace.
“For our home, I’d place the rugs in the hallway as a runner or lengthwise along the wide stacking door that opens out onto the front deck.”
For Thomas, family is everything. He treasures being present and enjoying life's best moments with those he loves. As Father's Day approaches, Thomas underscores the importance of savouring simple pleasures and spending quality time with loved ones. The Double x Thomas Surfboards collaboration offers a perfect, unique gift for Aussie dads — a decor staple designed to elevate their homes while adding a touch of cool into their space. When asked about his ideal Father’s Day, Thomas remains true to form: authentic and uncomplicated.
“The ideal Father’s Day celebration for me would just be a relaxing weekend. I’m not after anything special — just some quality family time, a few beach hangs, and I'll be happy.”
